"I tried a little exercise the other day. On my third visit to the annual New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show, I did not take any pictures. I prepared myself to be overwhelmed by the riot of color and strange shapes that seem impossibly unnatural."

I love, love, love this meditation on visiting the Garden without a camera. I get this way on vacation sometimes, when I feel pressure to capture every moment in pixels, and then, inevitably the camera battery dies, and then the phone battery, and then I have nothing to rely upon but my memory. And I relax. I realize that not having a silicon-enabled device between me and the experience is actually nice, enhances my enjoyment of the moment rather than dulls it. In the end, I always go back to the camera, but sometimes I’m a little relieved when the battery dies. ~AR

Botanical Gardens Orchid Show

2013

A few pics I took

So! Much! Color!!

In case you need some understanding of what you’re looking at, there’s a Manolo Valdés sculpture, some neotropical blueberries in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a few images from The Orchid Show, and of course, the ever famous jade vine. As you can see, there’s plenty to do around our 250 acres at the moment, and that’s before spring really kicks in! ~AR

#orchidshow (at New York Botanical Garden)

I like this shot taken at one of our Orchid Evening events. It’s orchids and cocktails and tropical warmth and beauty and splendor all rolled into one evening. It’s pretty excellent! And guess what? We have just added a slew of new dates too, including Saturday, March 30 and Fridays, April 5, 12, and 19. ~AR

Amazing review of The Orchid Show (which opens today!) from our friend Dominique Browning. To say that she gets what NYBG curator Francisca Coelho was aiming for is an understatement. If you’re on the fence about whether or not to visit us, I think Dominique will be able to convince you! ~AR

Orchids, poetry, gardening, public transportation … so many of my favorite things all in one place!  This serves as a really great reminder that getting to the Orchid Show via public transportation is pretty easy. You can take the subway, the bus, or Metro-North!
artsfortransit:

Have you seen the newest member of the Poetry in Motion collection? Mary Ruefle is an author of numerous books including the forthcoming book Trances of the Blast due out this year. Her poem Voyage, from an earlier book of hers, Memling’s Veil, is paired with Francesco Simeti’s permanent artwork, Bensonhurst Gardens. Located at the 18th Ave subway station on the D-Line in Brooklyn, this laminated glass work is based on wallpapers, ranging from Renaissance and Baroque garden architecture to hunting. Look for this beautiful poster commissioned by the Poetry Society of America and AFT, the next time you take the subway!

STEPHANIE SAYS: ADVENTURES IN THE EXOTIC
What are the makings for a great date night? Excellent cocktails? Check. Great music? Check. Orchids? Uhm…yes! If you haven’t checked out the New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Evenings yet, you really must do yourself (and that special someone) a favor and hook yourself up.
Flamboyant botanist, Patrick Blanc’s Vertical Gardens Orchid Show is already a feast for the senses. Add a signature cocktail courtesy of Dylan’s Candy Bar and a hot DJ spinning the latest, and you have the makings for a night to remember. Saturdays from 6:30-9:00 through April 20th Check here for more info.

Well, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks for saying it for me Stephanie! ~AR
