Artist Uli Westphal is documenting and eating Berlin’s vegetable curiosities. Why is this noteworthy? Because the “uniform standardization parameters,” set up by the EU’s predecessor the EEC dictates that vegetables and fruits must adhere to certain standards in order to enter into Europe’s chain of edible commerce. Learn more in Edible Geography’s wonderful post about Westphal’s work and the very obvious point that the Eurocrats are missing: That judging food by its appearance tells us very little about its ultimate deliciousness.
