Two Million and Counting
A rare local icon known as Sarracenia purpurea, a purple pitcher plant native to New York bogs, landed the esteemed privilege of being the two millionth specimen to be entered into the NYBG’s growing digital database of collected plants. To be clear, we’re bombastically (only word that does this justice) proud of the extensive work our scientists have put toward getting our entire Herbarium collection into the system, and they’re still trucking right along with only about five million specimens to go.
Small potatoes—they’ve got this.
PhysOrg put together a great write-up of the photographic process of digitizing our collection—from new specimens to those centuries old—as well as a rundown of how this newly accessible collection will make things easier for researchers around the world. Click through for the story, and if you see one of our scientists wandering the grounds, offer as many high fives as you feel comfortable giving. They deserve ‘em. —MN
