Tending Vertical Gardens
As anyone who visited our 2012 Orchid Show understands, vertical gardens are a complicated concept—and not just the massive installations that our friend Patrick Blanc specializes in. Plants are accustomed to growing on horizontal planes for the most part. So how do you make them comfortable on the Y axis?
“They’re not easy because there are so many technical issues — irrigation, proper nutrients, choosing the right plant palette,” says Karen Daubmann, our Associate Vice President for Exhibitions.
But don’t let that scare you. With proper research, a little technical know-how, and a dedicated plant care regimen, building your own vertical garden with ready-made materials is becoming more and more feasible. Just be prepared for an uphill sustainability battle. Click through for more. —MN
