Cost of Conserving Global Biodiversity Set at $76 Billion: Scientific American

What’s the last thing a plant did for you? Maybe it fed you, or clothed you, or warmed you, or soothed you. Or maybe it trapped some carbon dioxide for you. Plants do a lot for people, and people are slowly whittling away at the places that plants call home. A new study published in the journal Science looked at the cost of protecting all the world’s threatened species and pegged it at $4 billion a year. In addition, the researchers also say that the world should add an additional $76 billion per year to effectively conserve the land and oceans that these species call home. But don’t think of it as a bill, think of it as an investment in staying warm, fed, and protected. ~AR
