NYMPHAMANIA

Nymphaeaceae is the family name for water lillies and August is the month that the aquatic flowers go into a frenzy of color and blooms.

This year the ponds in the New York Botanical Garden’s conservatory courtyards are an extension of the Monet’s Garden exhibition in the adjoining Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Many of the varieties blooming now are the same varieties that inspired Monet in his gardens at Giverny where he created his masterpieces of changing light and shadow in his series of Water Lily paintings the Nymphéas.

Oh man, definition of “eye candy.” Thanks Trish! We’re hoping to see the water lilies (and their pals, the lotus) blooming into September, meaning there’s still time to catch them at the NYBG before autumn makes itself known. —MN
