Destroying Angel

Quasi-weekly fungus tiiiime. “Destroying Angel” isn’t a Finnish death metal band, at least not in this instance. Rather, it’s the common moniker for several species of Amanita mushrooms, most of them bleach white and all of them deadly serious. And, by that, I mean they will pack your bags and pitch you into an early grave if eaten. (Not a subject you want to equivocate on.)

Paired with the death cap, these fungi are responsible for the overwhelming majority of mushroom-related fatalities throughout the world, and veteran mushroom hunters will insist that you be able to recognize all of their varieties on sight before you even flirt with the idea of picking mushrooms.

Mycology can be serious business. Don’t hit the woods with culinary intentions unless you’re an absolute expert on species identification. —MN
