The she in the above quote is none other than Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton, wife of Nathaniel Lord Britton, was an amazing scientist, bryologist, naturalist, and co-founder of the Garden with her husband and a group of other New Yorkers. This is William Mitten. He was a British pharmaceutical chemist who compiled a collection of over 50,000 plant specimens, mostly mosses, in his lifetime. He was a bryologist, someone who studies mosses.
