My attention was originally drawn to this photo by the way the cacti mimic the curves of the conservatory arches. Then I looked more closely at the architecture of this glasshouse and began wondering why it looked so exotic. Turns out the Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Garden (website in German) in Stuttgart, Germany is a Moorish wonderland created for the Swabian King William I in the mid-19th century, and based on the Alhambra (we can sympathize). This particular building is the Maurisches Landhaus (I think I might start calling all conservatories landhauses … I like that!), which was designed in 1864 by Karl-Ludwig von Zanth and restored in 1972 and 2002 to repair damage sustained in WWII. It is now home to five biomes and a nocturnal animals house (sleeping animals!).  Wilhelma has just gone onto my list of must-see botanical gardens of the world! Which ones are on your list? ~AR
