I’m doing little water colour paintings of the herb and then doing a little profile on them. I’ll write out simple things like it’s scientific name, it’s family, how to grow it and any medicinal properties it provides. Then, at the back of the journal, I’m going to paste in samples of the plants that I’ve collected.
So far I’ve only gotten two sage leaves, some cardamom seeds and some frankincense. This is what the outside of the journal look like:
Pretty huh?
Gardening journals and their functional variations. So good. The NYBG’s Gardener for Public Education, Sonia Uyterhoeven, put together a piece late in 2011 on the practical fun to be had in dabbling with these, but we didn’t have any great shots of a journal in progress at the time.
This is absolutely the kind of thing you want to be doing for yourself if you plan on keeping a home garden beyond the “honeymoon” stage. —MN
