After passing along the image of the youth’s bicycle engulfed (if not assimilated) by a tree, Ann pointed me in the direction of another wartime curio. But this one takes the concept of the decorated battlefield veteran to an entirely more literal level.
Pockmarked with metallic shrapnel, the hunk of knotted wood was brought in to a taping of Antiques Roadshow for professional appraisal, at which point Rafael Eledge’s heart skipped briefly out of rhythm. The appraiser explained that the piece is a section of tree limb which had lived through the violence of the Civil War. Unable to push the many bits of cannonball shrapnel and lead rifle rounds out of its wood, the scarred knots simply grew around them, up until the tree or its limb was cut decades later.
This piece of wood is punched on all sides by projectiles. Considering the scene in real-time is somewhat hellish. —MN
