Blacklight mushroom posters had a resurgence in the mid- to late nineties, but that’s not what you’re looking at (breathe a sigh of relief).

Naturally bioluminescent mushrooms produce a compound known as luciferin, along with the enzyme luciferase, which act in conjunction with oxygen to create a unique glow in low-light conditions. It’s the same effect you see in fireflies, or—if you happen to live in the ocean—certain cuttlefish, krill, and other swimming creatures.
