Galanthophiles on the Rise
Despite my initial skepticism, our own Ann Rafalko isn’t the only galanthophile on the face of this green Earth. The BBC reports her fevered love of the demure snowdrop (Galanthus) has spread to pandemic levels; collectors from around the world are shelling out as much as $570 for a single bulb of certain cultivars, and even the everyday varieties are zipping off wholesaler shelves. For a hardy little flower with such soft-spoken charm, that’s an almost frightening dedication, resulting in several thousands-strong conventions taking place in Europe and elsewhere.
Will orchid aficionados take umbrage with the Galanthus gang over the infringement of their obsessive eminence? I won’t comment for fear of bodily harm. —MN
